Black pepper is a climbing plant from the pepper family (Piperaceae). Originally from southern India, it is now widespread and available worldwide. The fruits are cooked and/or dried to produce white, green or black pepper.

The essential oil of black pepper is obtained by steam distillation of the fruit and has a spicy, strong aroma with a stimulating, energising effect. Applied externally, it can have a positive effect on the circulation.

Black pepper has been used by humans since ancient times and, like many Asian spices, has a long tradition in folk medicine.
