During the last three decades, clinical studies have been conducted on its relaxing properties. Researchers have located the sesquiterpenes, valerenic acid and valerone as active constituents that exert a calming and restorative effect on the central nervous system.

German health authorities have declared Valerian as an active aid for the body's needs.
