Palo Santo comes from the same plant family (Burseraceae) as frankincense, although Palo Santo is found in South America and not in the Middle East.

Like frankincense, palo santo is known as a spiritual plant and is highly valued.

Traditionally, Palo Santo was used by the Incas to clear and purify the mind of negative energies. Its Spanish name reflects how highly regarded this tree is. Palo Santo means "sacred wood" or "consecrated wood".
