Hinoki essential oil, originally from central Japan, is extracted from the Japanese cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa.

The Hinoki shining cypress is considered a very high-quality timber and one of the "Five Sacred Trees of Kiso".

The wood was traditionally used to build palaces, temples, shrines, baths and the famous Noh theatres.

The oil is particularly famous for its characteristic and typically Japanese aroma. The wood is pink-brown in tone, smells slightly of lemon and is incredibly resistant to decay and insects.

Highly revered by the Japanese, the hinoki forests have been protected since the times of the Japanese feudal lords and the samurai. Today, the Hinoki shining Cypress is a popular ornamental tree in gardens and parks.
